A private
safari celebration

When it comes to big milestones – no matter the occasion – the grand celebratory soirée isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. If you prefer an escape from the crowds, reward yourself with taking only your nearest and dearest on the safari adventure of a lifetime.

There’s no denying Mother Nature is the greatest artist, and East Africa is a stage set for a showcase. Joined by a select audience, enjoy exclusivity at every turn on a journey woven through a tapestry of awe-inspiring landscapes.

Travelling at the time of the Great Migration, private game drives are a given, roaming conservancies to spot the coats of camouflaged big cats awaiting scores of wildebeest, zebras and gazelles along their time-honoured route. Between destinations, pilots become chauffeurs, taking the scenic route through the skies at every opportunity to wonder at the luscious greenery of the Silale Crater, the striking hues of Lakes Magadi and Natron, and the pink feathers of flamingos far below. And as day becomes dusk, sunset cruising under a sky blushed amber and rose reminisces a day spent snorkelling among the vivid colours of coral reefs. Even the dark of night is something to behold, if you'd like to sleep beneath the stars. Dull doesn't exist in these parts.

Where you’ll be going

Get to know where you’ll be exploring across Kenya and Tanzania, from the city-meets-safari capital of Nairobi to the beachfront bliss of the Zanzibar archipelago.

  • Nairobi, Kenya

A unique beating heart where urban epicentre meets ‘safari capital’, Nairobi encapsulates all the breadth of Kenya’s character in one manageable and excitable boundary. A hubbub for its café culture, restaurants, and bustling night life, there’s soul in the streets and crafts galore. And, because it wouldn’t be Kenya without our very own friends, there’s a national park and plenty of wildlife conservations to explore.

    Stay at: Hemingways Nairobi
  • Northern Kenya

Kenya’s best-kept secret, heading north to the eco-conservatories of Borana, Laikipia and Lewa is about so much more than a change in scenery. With conservation being at the heart of what they do, teams go to great lengths to protect highly endangered and lesser-known species. Including rhinos, jackal, oryx, striped polecat, and even the jet-black panther, this is a safari experience that challenges even the most familiar feet with a fresh perspective.

    Stay at: Segera Retreat
  • Maasai Mara

Lovingly known as the ‘Mara’ by locals, this world-renowned park brings sheer delight to safari-goers that prefer things big and bold. Where wildlife instincts run deeper than any watering hole they’re searching for, it’s the place to be for the Great Migration and the year-round spectacle of the Big 5. And, best of all, with the highest density of lions in the world, it’s almost expected to watch the King of the Jungle go strutting by.

    Stay at: Mara Plains Camp
  • A sail boat at waters edge
    Zanzibar, Tanzania

The archipelago of Zanzibar is somewhat of a wildcard, but with its bohemian vibe, mellow pace and decidedly quieter yet still sugar-white sands, it gives the Maldives a run for its money. Off the coast of Tanzania, the Indian Ocean’s legendary ‘island of spices’ packs a lot of personality into its small confines. Its trading past means influences have come and gone, leaving behind a vibrant free-spirited ambience lingering in every grain of sand.

    Stay at: Zuri Zanzibar

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Soar over Suguta Valley

A day trip across a geographical muse, the Suguta Valley has long inspired artists, filmmakers, scientists and photographers. Forming part of the Great Rift, this marvel feels as far from civilisation as could be. First, fly over the vast caldera of the Silale Crater with its carpet of green, followed by the dramatic rock formations of the Hoodoe and Painted Valleys, and dunes of the Suguta Desert. See the flamingos of the Logipi Lake, before visiting the sun-bleached volcanic beaches of Lake Turkana – or the Jade Sea, as it is known. Complete with granite outcrops and petrified lava flows, this lakeshore is the site of discovery for some of the most ancient fossil finds.

    • A dramatic detour over the Great Rift Valley

Hopping between destinations is an event itself in Kenya. En route to the Maasai Mara, this scenic flightpath showcases a landscape of contrasts, covering the smoking craters of towering volcanoes, the rich blues of ribbon lakes, the verdant forests on the eastern escarpment and sweeping savannah plains. Look a little closer and you might just see the pink feathers of flamingos too.

    • See the sister lakes where flamingos flock

Flying south from Nairobi, find the vivid colours of lakes Magadi and Natron – their striking red and blue waters visible from high above amid rugged volcanic rock. Though it seems almost impossible, these salt-crushed shores are home to 75% of the world’s lesser flamingo, injecting vibrant life into an arid landscape.

    • Culture, cuisine and cruising in Kendwa

Become a Swahili chef for the day, sharing in the cooking influences that shape Zanzibari cuisine. Starting with a spice garden tour, learn about local spices and fruits, before getting stuck into a cooking class to put new flavours to the test. Taste your foodie creations for lunch, and afterwards, enjoy a sunset cruise, paired perfectly with sundowners on Kendwa’s waters.

    • Step back in time at Stone Town and Prison Island

Tour the old town of Zanzibar City, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a multitude of influences from the ancient Sultans, Arabs and Europeans. Once one of the main slave-trading ports in East Africa, understand its importance in the suppression of slavery by visiting the slave markets, and continue to the Anglican Cathedral, Palace of the Sultans, the Old Arabic Fort, and the Forodhani Park. To round off the day, a 30-minute boat cruise leads to Prison Island, where a prison no longer stands, but giant tortoise roam.

    • Snorkelling and dolphin spotting at Mnemba Island

Hop on a half-day private boat tour to a popular diving spot on the coast of Zanzibar. Watching out for dolphins on the way, arrive at Mnemba Island, located in the atoll of the same name. Here, snorkel just below the surface to reveal a colourful coral reef teeming with tropical fish.
