Luxury Zambia holidays

  • Big river waterfall during dark

Beckoned by thunderous Victoria Falls, boots are an essential to keep the spring in your step in this home of the African walking safari.

Beckoned by thunderous Victoria Falls, boots are an essential to keep the spring in your step in this home of the African walking safari.

Culturally revered for its seventh natural wonder of the world, there’s a delightful feeling of first discoveries on a luxury safari trip to Zambia. Peering over Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls inspires a rush of adrenaline, and there’s an unparalleled sense of awe in that first sunset seen from a Zambezi River lodge.

Better still, traversing these less trodden paths is as immersive as could be. Zambia holidays are more than just game drives; awaken to the sound of birdsong, see warthogs, impala and baboons en route to breakfast, watch wildlife bathe from your veranda, and pause in the spa while elephants saunter through camp. Rest your head as the heat subsides and wildlife stirs; hear lions roar and a bloat of hippos on the move. These open camps make for authentic safari experiences, living alongside the animals you came to see.

… the under the radar alternative

Classic luxury safari tours often lean towards the sprawling savannahs of Kenya, deltas of Botswana and coastlines of South Africa. But whether you’re looking for something new, or heading straight for the underdog, a tour through Zambia’s bushlands are the natural next step. And with 20 national parks to choose from, it’s simply not possible to see its entirety in just one trip; between the leopards of South Luangwa and the riverbanks of the Lower Zambezi, you’ll have a new familiar favourite in no time.

A sense of place

Get to know our favourite spots for Zambia holidays, from landing in the capital, Lusaka, to exploring its national parks on foot, four wheels, or by boat.

  • Africa, Zambia, road lined with purple flowering jacaranda trees in Lusaka
    Lusaka

The capital city of Zambia sitting right at its heart, all roads here lead to Lusaka. One of the fastest growing cities in central Africa, it’s the common ground of any journey by road or air across this vast and varied country.

  • a giraffe standing in a forest
    South Luangwa National Park

Pioneering feet paved the way here in the birthplace of African walking safaris. Scored by an orchestra of birdsong, spotting a big cat is most likely in this Valley of the Leopard – a highlight for many travellers on Zambia holidays – its concentration of wildlife rivalling the densest on the continent.

  • a group of animals in a field with trees in the background
    Kafue National Park

Home to the largest array of species in any of the nation’s National Parks, this giant stretches out over both land and longevity as the oldest and largest on the list. The cryptic Cheetah is most prevalent here, hidden while four of the Big Five wander freely, now protected from previous threats of poaching.

  • a body of water with trees and a sunset
    Lower Zambezi National Park

Once the private game reserve of Zambia’s president, game drives are accompanied by walking and river safaris between the Zambezi River in the South and Escarpment to the North. An abundance of water attracts the likes of lions, buffalo and elephants, while the proximity of the UNESCO World Heritage Mana Pools keeps wildlife close by.

  • a river with a large body of water that turns into a waterfall
    Victoria Falls

Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘The Smoke That Thunders’, her presence needs no introduction. The seventh natural wonder of the world mightily marks the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, with Devil’s Pool perching precariously at the precipice for a particularly hair-raising photo opportunity.

Extraordinary
experiences

    • Africa, Zambia, close up photo of a leopard relaxing in a tree
Tour South Luangwa’s conservation headquarters and try your hand at traditional crafts

Visit the team at Conservation South Luangwa to meet the rangers protecting 1.4 million hectares of wilderness in the South Luangwa Valley. The tour then takes an artistic turn, to creative businesses supporting local conservation. First is Mulberry Mongoose, where snare wire traps are transformed into jewellery. Then, over at Tribal Textiles, join a batik workshop to learn the unique techniques of hand painting.

    • Africa, Zambia, bird stood on a tree branch
Take a walk on the wild side in the home of walking safaris

Beginning bright and early, venture out on foot for a walking safari in the very place they were first pioneered on the African continent. While focusing in on the finer details too often missed on four wheels, listen out for the morning song of birdlife, and rather arresting alarm calls of baboons. After heading back for brunch, spend quiet moments capturing close ups of wandering wildlife from one of many photography hides hidden in the bushlands.

    • Africa, Zambia, sunset over the Zambezi River
Watch the sun's slow descent from the water

Painting the skies in a palette of gold and rose, watch the sun fade into night over the sweeping Zambezi Escarpment. Cruising along the Zambezi, bypass elephants and hippos en route to a secluded sundowner spot, to raise a glass as one of the best sunsets across all of Africa unfolds, its reflection in calm waters doubling the grandeur of golden hour. End the evening back at camp with pre-dinner drinks under a clear sky of stars.

  • A cheetah laying in the foreground with a safari car behind
    Botswana

You’ve never felt as remote as in Botswana, with its placid lagoons, eco-diverse island game reserve and the lunar-like salt flats of Makadikadi Basin.

  • An African landscape with two natives walking
    Kenya

Bright red shukas, the savannah’s most notable characters, and a landscape of flat plains that billow into hills, Kenya is archetypal Africa.

    Explore
  • Baobabs trees lining dirt road in Madagascar on cloudy day
    Madagascar

Unspoilt and uncrowded, Madagascar is the land of the ‘blue safari’ – where snorkelling, diving and sailing in the warm turquoise waters is only paused for a bit of lemur spotting.

    Explore
  • View of old buildings, trees and mountains
    Morocco

Arabia’s mystical allure and Africa’s vibrancy converge in Morocco, refusing to give in to Western ways and instead delivering a splendid culture contrast that’s sure to stay rooted in traveller’s minds forever.

    Explore
  • A view of a boat from between trees
    Mozambique

A country still with some growing to do, these lesser-trodden coastlines that often act as an add-on to a South African safari are a rare find of authenticity-meets-blissfully-beachy break.

    Explore
  • Sandy dunes in a desert next to the sea
    Namibia

Ethereal expanses of dunes merge into wild, coastal wilderness in this sun-baked land, casting the spooky spell of the sands that’s all too exciting and easy to succumb to.

    Explore
  • A gorilla looking out into the jungle
    Rwanda

Untamed and mysterious, the sulky rainforests of Rwanda are a wildlife wonderland, where golden monkeys peak out from behind dense leaves, bushbuck scarper at the slightest of sounds and gorillas take over the mountains.

    Explore
  • A panoramic view of cape town at sunset
    South Africa

The ‘Rainbow Nation’ that earnt her stripes in a cacophony of languages, three buzzing cities, and everything from safaris to Winelands in-between; it’s not just a colourful diversity, but the sheer joy for surprises that keeps familiar feet coming back for more.

    Explore
  • A small herd of zebra grazing grass
    Tanzania

Tanzania is a Great Migration, the volcanic peaks watching over herds as they cross vast plains and indented craters, eyed intensely by the climbing lions from their treetop perches; but this book holds more than just its front cover.

    Explore
  • A sail boat at waters edge
    Zanzibar

The archipelago of Zanzibar is somewhat of a wildcard, but with its bohemian vibe, mellow pace and decidedly quieter yet still sugar-white sands, it gives the Maldives a run for its money.

  • an elephant with tusks walking in tall grass
    Zimbabwe

Bringing off-the-beaten-track safari experiences that’re just as active as its dramatic Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe is no stranger to a thrilling escapade.
