Anguilla

  • A person at the edge of an infinity pool looking out at a boat in the sea

Clapboard barbecue beach shacks and an air of welcome idleness attract visitors from all walks of life to this Caribbean favourite, but it’s the deliciously straightforward ease of living that keeps them coming back for more.

If Anguilla could speak, it would insist everyone cast aside their concept of schedules and worries upon setting foot on its rustic flat soil. But as it is, the island leaves its sleepy villages and chilled out locals to do the talking. This is a place to hide away, where big names fly under-the-radar and all the usual life admin is abandoned in favour of unwinding on the best beaches in the Caribbean; spending lazy afternoons at Sandy Island Cay swaying to gentle beats of reggae.

Even the champagne tastes of glamorous sibling St Barths take on a more relaxed approach, with fine-dining establishments welcoming beach-chic attire, slow-paced golf played on a spared-no-expense course, and private villas peppered between bucolic surroundings.

… food that will never leave your thoughts

Anguilla is easy-going in most ways bar one – its cuisine. This pioneering food scene has dawned best-in-class eateries from humble feet-in-the-sand-dining at Blanchard’s Beach Shack – serving up fresh fish tacos and fiery jerk chicken – to the exquisitely presented red snapper ceviche in Straw Hat (a dish we think rivals those we’ve tasted in Mexico). With a younger generation of foodies taking over the independent and casual locale, trends are being infused with tradition to create some of the best fare the envy of the whole Caribbean.

It's all idyllic landscapes and take-it-easy vibes in the Caribbean... at least, that's what the newbies think. But those in the know, they're the ones who see that not all of these islands can fit into the same mould.

    Antigua

Between hushed coves and Crayola buildings, the underlying strum of Antigua’s maritime heritage hums softly below the beat of its Caribbean core; this is the place to throw cares out of the window and be unapologetically peaceful.

    Jamaica

If we could bottle up Jamacia’s soulful aura, we’d confidently release it in the form of song, to inspire letting loose and getting into the local groove for that truly euphoric feeling.

There’s an exclusive air about these off-the-radar islands; maybe it’s the quiet, unspoilt cays where gleaming white yachts drift at anchor, or, maybe it’s the in-crowd preferring to keep its beauty to a select few.
