Africa & Indian Ocean

WHO'S ONBOARD: NATURE-LOVING VENTURESOME TYPES  — BEST FOR: EQUILIBRIUM BETWEEN ADVENTURE & EASE — CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF: CULTURE & COMMUNITY
EXPEDITION CRUISING

An enchanting coastline as far as the eye can see, Africa’s plentiful patchwork of landscapes abounds in expedition experiences.

EXPEDITION CRUISING

An enchanting coastline as far as the eye can see, Africa’s plentiful patchwork of landscapes abounds in expedition experiences.

Often the pin is dropped on South Africa, where cities steeped in history and culture take the spotlight. The still sun-warmed waters of Lagebaan Lagoon are a quieter contrast, until afternoon winds allow thrill-seekers to windsurf across its glassy surface. Across the border, whale watching brings wildlife enthusiasts to Namibia’s Walvis Bay, though the best viewpoints are earned venturing to the heights of Dune 7.

On the continent’s west coast, there’s an antithesis to neighbours Togo and Ghana, greeting guests with a meeting of authenticity and innovation. Looking forward to the future, Ghana enjoys anything but a leisurely pace, while centuries-old communities continue happily unchanged in Togo.

The islands to the east of this geographical giant may carry a reputation of lounging languidly on soft sands, but the likes of Madagascar and the Seychelles hold the key to an untouched underwater world. Perhaps an unexpected destination for an expedition, taking a deep dive into the Indian Ocean reveals its aquatic appeal.

Port report
A spotlight on the places not to be missed

    • Seychelles

      A place of eternal sunshine

Where Flintstone-like boulders spill from volcanic hills and flawless atolls skirt busy island towns, the Seychelles are an archipelago of opposites. Mid-hike mountain vistas overlook waters of aquamarine on Mahé, where diving divulges the secrets hiding below the surface. Meanwhile, in the cosmopolitan capital, fresh produce and handcrafted trinkets exchange hands at the bustling Sir Selwyn-Clarke Market. Across the water, the prettily petite La Digue island embodies the serenity of slow life. Beaches of sugar-fine sand frame pink-tinged granite on an islet lavished by luscious vegetation, ideal for housing the giant tortoise and welcoming sea turtles ashore. Better still, snorkelling in shallow waters reveals coral reefs teeming with tropical fish.

    • Madagascar

      On the wild side

Unspoilt and uncrowded, Madagascar is the land of the ‘blue safari’ – where snorkelling, diving and sailing in warm turquoise waters are paused only to look for the red-tailed tropicbird or to hear the call of the black lemur echoing among the trees. A microcosmos of native wildlife, here is an island where much of the flourishing flora and fauna thrive like nowhere else on earth. Take Toliara, for instance, where the sweet-smelling perfumery of Antsokay Arboretum botanical gardens are well worth a visit; paired, of course, with the museum of Mahafaly Ethnology for a bountiful blend of history and horticulture.

    • South Africa & Namibia

      Wonder round every corner

Colourful diversity and the sheer joy of surprises beckon voyagers this far south. In South Africa, cameras rarely do justice to the beauty blossoming in the West Coast National Park’s famed flower season; in the ‘Mother City’, a cable car climbing Table Mountain provides the perfect vantage point above art-filled city streets, sublime beaches and the historic Robben Island. Flamingos flock on the coastline of neighbouring Namibia, where German art nouveau architecture stands out on rocky-shored Lüderitz. While just inland, Kolmanskop casts a spooky spell over the sands. Once a diamond-mining hotspot, a tour through this ghost town takes a trip through the sands of time.

    • Togo & Ghana

      Worlds collide

Opposites attract, and on the west coast it certainly rings true. Contrasting capitals sit side by side in Togo and Ghana; age-old authenticity balancing a fast-paced population. Life in untouched Lomé is a varied affair. Tribal traditions intertwine daily in so small a city, manifested most of all in the market stalls selling everything from fresh fruits to voodoo spirit dolls. A comparison inspiring intrigue, Ghana’s largest city embraces innovation, though its high-energy reputation stands on an earnest respect for the past. Understanding the journey to independence, Accra’s Independence Square and Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park are landmarks not to be missed.
