Polar Regions

WHO'S ONBOARD: SEASONED & SPIRITED CRUISERS  — BEST FOR: THE TRIP OF A LIFETIME — CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF: UP-CLOSE ZODIAC TOURS
EXPEDITION CRUISING

Glistening glaciers surrounded by pristine waters for miles around — these classic expedition cruises are oh so worthy of their title.

EXPEDITION CRUISING

Glistening glaciers surrounded by pristine waters for miles around — these classic expedition cruises are oh so worthy of their title.

Nothing short of the experience of a lifetime, venturing into the Polar Regions brings the environmentalism behind slow travel to life in perhaps the most vulnerable places on our planet. An awe for the natural world is innate in the Antarctic, seemingly untouched by humanity save for the occasional reminder of explorers gone by. As voyagers move south from Deception Island to Paradise Bay and Marguerite Bay, Weddell seals can be spotted lounging on ice floes, embracing the typical cruising lifestyle.

Truly the polar opposite, the Arctic may be home to the snow-coated polar bears of both Nordaustlandet and Monumental Island, but also holds a sprinkling of our northernmost cities. Reykjavik for instance, is a popular port of call, famed for its Hallgrimskirkja Church and Harpa concert hall.

Places of wonder for the curious, the keen conservationists, and the aspiring adventurers, this colder side of expedition cruising will open your eyes to the far reaches of the globe once thought impossible to explore.

Port report
A spotlight on the places not to be missed

    • Antarctica, South Georgia & The Falklands

      Ends of the earth

Beyond the coasts of South America, an outlying archipelago of over 700 islands offers a stepping stone to Antarctic exploration. A destination for the historians among us, trips to The Falklands feature walking tours through the capital, Stanley, covering key events including the defining 80s conflict. Pair these islets with South Georgia, however, and the focus turns to the flightless flocks waddling sandy seashores. King penguins, and their unmistakeable orange feathers, reign over rocky headlands in these parts, alongside whales, seals and sea lions. Further south, such abundance in the animal kingdom is replaced by the striking beauty of a harsh Antarctic environment.

    • Ross Sea & East Antarctica

      Seventh heaven

A luxury afforded to few at a time, cruising to the seventh continent is a journey to almost another world. An ice-white landscape as far as the eye can see, visit the Ross Sea Ice Shelf – thought to be the size of France – and Ross Island, where the huts of early explorers stand frozen in time, remnants of the race to the South Pole. Across pristine waters, the rugged volcanic rocks of Franklin Island, once a shield volcano, are reached by Zodiac; though the most alien of landscapes are spotted from the skies. Soar over the McMurdo Dry Valleys by helicopter to take in the Mars-like scenery below.

    • The Arctic

      Wild things

Glacial grandeur and wandering wildlife characterise the dizzying heights of the Arctic. To explore the northernmost part of our planet is to sail into the cinematography of an Attenborough documentary, where polar bears prowl in search of seals sliding effortlessly through the ice-cold waters. The late summer months bring the best opportunities for whale watching ahead of migration, while the Canadian sea cliffs of Lady Franklin Island are the place to look for wild walruses. Birds of a feather flock together on the uninhabited Apatok Island, a reminder that these parts were once reserved only for history’s most intrepid explorers.

    • Iceland

      Fire and ice

An Arctic Circle wilderness dotted with geothermal lagoons and cloud-shrouded volcanic peaks, Europe’s least densely populated country exudes an air of dramatic mystery. Small-town charm transcends from east to west in the likes of Seyðisfjörður and Ísafjörður, where 19th-century timber houses stand against a backdrop of flawless blue fjords. The catch of the day is reeled in on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Grundarfjörður, a colourful fishing village overlooked by Church Mountain. Still, the thrill of the wild is more than matched by the vibrancy of Reykjavik with its local designer fashion and craft shops, cutting edge galleries, and eclectic collection of architecture.

  • The gateway to Antarctica-bound cruises, spend some time getting to know Buenos Aires before casting off. A guided walking tour is the best way, exploring the vivacious streets lined with art nouveau architecture, Parisian-style cafés and lively wine bars.
  • Before the excitement of the expedition, delve into the past in Bergen’s UNESCO World Heritage site – Bryggen. The cradle of the city, wandering the narrow alleys unearths treasures of Norway’s Hanseatic past, from markets to the Bergenhus Fortress.
  • Following the excitement of the Arctic, downtime can be found on the volcanic shores of Iceland. Famed the world over for its healing properties, the Blue Lagoon’s thermal waters make for the perfect place to rest expedition-weary limbs.
