Eastern Sicily & authenticity

  • Europe, Italy, Sicily, Noto Baroque Architecture

Spanning from baroque towns to Goethe’s ‘corner of paradise’, eastern Sicily is an education in architecture, culture and community, going toe-to-toe with the boot of mainland Italy.

Taormina - Noto

Spanning from baroque towns to Goethe’s ‘corner of paradise’, eastern Sicily is an education in architecture, culture and community, going toe-to-toe with the boot of mainland Italy.

The largest island in the glistening Mediterranean, Sicily’s diverse influences make for a melting pot of cultural curiosity. To travel through just one corner of these ancient lands is to journey through centuries of art in its many forms; history bottled, performed, tasted, or towering above like Mount Etna herself. Begin by taking in the charm of Taormina, its reputation as a Pearl of the Mediterranean proving timeless even today, thanks to its The White Lotus television fame.

Find where sea meets sand (or pebbles) to sail out from these storied lands. Exploring the coastline is a must, before journeying south to more secluded scenery. To experience true authenticity, call on the Baroque Sicilian towns sprinkled through the southeast. Their distinctive style rebuilt from tragedy, each is unique in its traditions. And with so many to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

A taste of
what's to come

    • A cinematic journey through Taormina

Weaving through charming streets steeped in history, exploring the Mediterranean Pearl is best done at a slow stroll. Historic monuments, municipal gardens and the Greek-Roman theatre may be the classic landmarks en route, but be sure to spot the scenery of The White Lotus second season, filmed across this enchanting little city. Picture-perfect vistas continue as you glide away from the city towards the bluest seas on the panoramic cableway before landing at coastal Mazzaró, to enjoy an afternoon by crystal clear waters, however you may please.

    • Europe, Italy, Sicily, Noto Cathedral exterior
See the real Sicily in Val di Noto

An architectural paradise, the church-lined streets of Noto are an education in grandiosity if ever there was one. Characterised by their distinctive Sicilian baroque style, visit the Palazzo Comunale, the Noto Cathedral, and the Duomo di San Nicolo to name just a few. Quenching thirst the traditional way, continue your journey through Val di Noto to sample local wines such as Nero d’Avola and Moscato at a local winery, followed by a tour of Marzamemi; a small fishing village that definitely knows how to dance. Add a taste of granita to round off an authentic Sicilian adventure.

    • Europe, Italy, Sicily, Island of Ortigia, Statue
Tour the ancient streets of Ortigia

Famed for its ancient history, this UNESCO world heritage site sits within Syracuse on the Ionian coast, boasting a wealth of influence from both the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Commanding the landscape, the Cathedral is not to be missed, home to the 6th-century-B.C. Temple of Apollo. Perhaps lesser known however, meet a local artisan specialising in handmade marionettes to learn about the Opera of the Puppets; a theatrical representation of Frankish romantic poetry, and a longstanding cultural tradition of the island.

Yes, when it comes to a glamorous, enriching, heat-hazy holiday, in our opinion, the Italians do it best. But it’s the underlying thrum of energy, unrelenting hospitality and passion of the people that truly makes it shine.
