Initially appearing as tranquil as a zen garden, the idea of sitting coconut in hand on this Indian Ocean favourite is what most would call their Valhalla. Yet having cunningly lured the lollygaggers in, Mauritius reveals it’s so much more than its blissed-out first impression; with a fondness for exhilarating water sports, spicy national curries and a wild and raw nature that make discovering its daring side all too tempting.
Switching out leisurely days spent beach-side dipping toes in for a paddle, it’s further out to sea that the true spirit of the island can be found. From sea karting the waters of Le Morne’s cleverly protected coral reefs to capturing hearts below the waves with a glimpse of the resident dolphins.
In pursuit of…
The Mauritian passion for the sea is only eclipsed by one thing, their love of simple yet exquisitely flavoured food. A mixture of Creole, Indian, French and African flavours, cuisine is taken very seriously here and a tour around Port Louis doesn’t fail to entice visitors into the same love affair. While a private distillery tour leads to sweet rum-soaked afternoons in the sun, intrepid epicureans find this adoration away from the markets and restaurants of the capital. Instead, they hike through Black River National Park to picnic on the mountains, or sail the lengths of the lagoons by catamaran to dine at the ruins of Governor’s House on Flat Island before returning by helicopter.

Surrounded by expanses of glittery bath-warm water while sunbathing on sands as soft as the most comforting of blankets. That sounds like the quintessential holiday ideal – that sounds like the Indian Ocean.
