Electric buggies hum around the car-free streets lined with fabulous designer boutiques, chic restaurants and buzzing après-ski bars nestled alongside old Valaisian style wooden barns. The quintessentially Swiss resort is an ideal choice for non-skiers who can use many of the mountain lifts to access the world class mountain restaurants and spectacular winter walking.
Off the slopes enjoy horse-drawn sleigh rides, outdoor ice skating, curling, snowshoeing, winter walking and helicopter flights in addition to a variety of winter events and festivities. Live bands on the home runs and irresistible après-ski bars in the village are filled with good natured merriment. Dancing spills out onto the streets while laid-back lounges and Champagne bars complete the mix of informal and sophisticated fun
With its reliable snow, magnificent scenery and Alpine charm, Zermatt offers some of the most attractive skiing in Europe. The Gornegrat cog railway and Sunnegga underground funicular access two of Zermatt’s four ski areas, a delight for intermediates who can cruise easy going pistes interlinked to more challenging reds. From the other end of the village the Matterhorn Express goes up to the smaller Schwarzsee area then skyward towards the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise complete with vast glacial panoramas. Skiers also have a seamless link to Cervinia via The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing cable car, allowing them to take full advantage of the 360km of pistes shared between the two resorts. With a guide, off-piste potential is superb for both experts and those who wish to venture off-piste for the first time.
