A mid-century modern dreamland where summer is eternal, as the name would suggest, this is a place where you can “lay low” within the bustle of Waikiki in preparation for days of exploration.

Better known as Hawaii’s ‘Garden Island’, with its leafy valleys and tropical rainforests, sustainably focused 1 Hotel couldn’t choose a better location for its flagship than Kaua’i. A safe haven for the nature-lovers, it’s consciously-designed exterior (made from tons of salvaged materials) is hugged by endemic plant species and native gardens on all four sides; with gallons of reused-water resourcefully caring for them and keeping things looking beautifully emerald. A second lease of life extends to the décor contained within its walls as the outside is intentionally brought in with a scattering of potted plants, woven baskets, dried grass skirts and lava stone walls instil a grounding experience for greener-hearts from the get-go.
A close connection to the landscape seamlessly throughout, island-friends find harmony with the people and practices that nourish it best. Locally grown medicinal plants, cryotherapy chambers, and a sensory deprivation tank are the healing antidote at the enviable world-class spa – buzzy-brains get in favour of mindful resets that have played a role here for centuries. Meanwhile energies erupt for whale-watching, canoe paddling and stargazing workshops that make even the oldest traditions seriously cool. Through contemporary conversations inspiring change and being into the mix – from artists in residence and farm-to-fork cuisine – and Kaua'i might even surprise herself with the way she brings everything full circle.
