An A-listers’ favourite, this private island paradise includes celebrity-owned private estates with a select few available for rent. Although the spa is the real star here.

Unabashedly contemporary in feel with its polished concrete, terrazzo and teak, this Asian-inflected resort on the shores of a nature reserve has an away-from-it-all feel.

With access to some of the finest scuba diving and snorkelling in this archipelago as well as one of the most heavenly sunset views (or perhaps migrating humpback whales between February and April) from its vast black-tiled infinity pool, Amanyara will release you from worldly cares for the duration of your stay. First up is a stop in the superlative spa with its tailored, potentially life-changing Wellness Immersions, including mindfulness and stress management using meditation, Qi Gong, yoga and breathwork.
Secondly there’s education to be had here too – taking to the ocean sees eye-opening adventures and a crash course in coral reef rejuvenation. Another way to get under the skin of this remarkable location is by donning your walking boots for an eco-hike in the company of a naturalist (followed by a seaview picnic). But even in the cocoon of the pavilions you’ll have no problems feeling part of this superabundant landscape. The vaulted spaces blur the line between indoor and outdoor, and many come with private terraces that lap at the water’s edge.

Board a conch fishing boat at Amanyara's Nature Discovery Centre, and assist marine biologists on a project to safeguard the indigenous turtles. The Centre also hosts daily activities for guests, and the resident naturalist can help you explore the island's native flora and migratory birds in the forest along the shoreline. Beneath the waves, a 27km barrier reef running along the north east shore of the island is home to some of the best dive sites in the region. Numerous reefs and spectacular wall formations offer diving opportunities for all abilities, whilst closer to shore superb snorkelling can be enjoyed directly off the beach at Amanyara.
