Imagine the scenes of bohemian Greece spruced up with the luxurious refinement only a world-renowned brand can master, and the scene conjured is probably that of Kèa Island.

Imagine the scenes of bohemian Greece spruced up with the luxurious refinement only a world-renowned brand can master, and the scene conjured is probably that of Kèa Island.

Helicopters touch down and yachts drop anchor to arrive in style at the gateway to the Cyclades. Where One&Only’s exclusive all-villa resort has beautifully blended their contemporary flair into a sleepy island sculpted by ancient civilisations.

Within the glossy curves and horizon-framing angles that speak of more recent times, it’s very much traditions and history that make themselves known. From the locally made produce served in the restaurants and cooking classes using only fire and ice to vivacious folky Panigiri nights in the local-market-stall-strewn piazza.

A sense of
place

Long an Athenian’s best-kept secret, the docile shores of Kéa have welcomed One&Only with open arms. In a bid to preserve authenticity, this peninsula-perched enclave has taken steps to ensure the island’s good looks are always on display.

When the discreet romantics and discerning families arrive, they come across remote biophilic-designed villas tripping down the hillside to the sea. Dressed in neutral colours, Kéa compliments the hiking-trail-laden landscapes, of which each lodging benefits from uninterrupted views.

QUIET-LUXURY

…the Greece of yesteryear.

Music fills the evening summer air and guests take to the dance floor fuelled by hearty produce as traditional Panigiri nights get underway in the piazza. It’s an ultimate celebration of Greek heritage, but this isn’t the only way the resort pays tribute. Gold-getters can shop unique pieces hand-crafted locally just for Kéa Island guests. Third-generation beekeeper and his wife, Georges and Geraldine, show guests how they produce wild thyme honey. And trips to delve into the art and culture of nearby town, Loulida, are led by a specialist curator.

    Wake up
    here

With each villa festooned with a private deck, a fireplace and cantilevered pool, the only deciding factor when it comes to choosing where to stay is how many rooms and how big of a view. The former comes easy; one-bedroom sanctuaries sleep two adults and two children, while two-bedrooms cater to the addition of a grown-up duo. When it comes to the views though, the Panoramic Sea View villas come out on top with floor-to-ceiling vistas across the Aegean.

On location

Shaded seating area of BOND beach club with well established trees and hedge borders

As slick and casually cool as its namesake, BOND Beach Club is where glamour meets down-to-earth. Taking up a plum position by the water’s edge, relaxing lazy days gradually crescendo into evenings where the mood is high and the DJ decks are spinning. Add in a restaurant open from noon to dusk serving a Japanese-Med fusion and leaving becomes challenging. Those who do tear themselves away for a while, though, take full advantage of the slice of calm that comes in the balancing spa. Or, get the blood pumping in Club One with its fitness centre, yoga studio and tennis court.

Within the glossy curves and horizon-framing angles that speak of more recent times, it’s very much traditions and history that make themselves known.

Beyond
family-friendly

Its sophisticated design and calm demeanour could lure visitors into thinking Kéa Island is reserved for the adults, but children thrive here. In the guise of a shipwreck, the KidsOnly club takes the hotel’s experiences and reworks them for tiny travellers.

Think destination-themed cooking classes and treasure hunts, cultural endeavours around island mythology and introductions to local marine life and shipwrecks — including that of the Titanic’s sister ship, the HMHS Britannic.

A Carrier
curation

The resort may be new, but practically a stone’s throw away lie 2,500-year-old buried treasures. With shirt sleeves rolled, meet up with resident archaeologist, Petroula, to help her dig up relics of the Hellenistic period. Then, hike to the ancient city of Karthea and the temples of Athena and Apollo, before rounding the day off with a swim and private boat ride back to the resort.
