Almost disappearing into its surroundings in the pristine Ahuriri Valley on New Zealand’s South Island, The Lindis lies near a dark sky reserve and offers some of the most spellbinding stargazing you’ll ever experience. People come to this far-flung station in the hope of simply enjoying the stillness and heightening their relationship with the vastness of their surrounds. Here, it’s about connecting with raw nature and The Lindis is a beautiful example of wild luxury. Activities open to you are numerous, including gliding, fly-fishing, horse-trekking, hiking, e-biking, off-road buggy tours, and guided or self-guided eco-tours – all in splendid isolation of course.
Accommodation is either in the intimate lodge itself – which designed to blend seamlessly into the surroundings, has a roofline that emulates the undulating countryside – or in new futurist pods a short walk away. Blink and you might miss them, the latter have mirrored walls that makes them all but invisible to passers-by, and aren’t without private outdoor bathtubs. When it comes to food, a remote location means the best menus are fashioned around local produce – to that end, it’s a big part of the experience here and you can expect to feast on the likes of locally foraged porcini mushrooms and wild Fiordland venison in refined contemporary dishes paired with out-of-this-world wines.
