Leaving the well-trodden paths of Bali for something a little more offbeat, discerning travellers are rewarded for their efforts aboard Vela. Unique in the fact its six cabins are above deck (one even has a terrace), just 12 guests get to enjoy its hospitality on any one voyage. European in design but decidedly Indonesian in character, Italian fabrics and Parisian fittings are complemented by local teak furniture and Ubud-made terracotta. While local dishes are served alongside some at-home favourites but always using the freshest of homegrown produce.
Sailing to several awe-inspiring destinations, including the UNESCO Komodo Islands in the summer and Raja Ampat in winter, a dedicated and diligent crew make every moment of the cruise perfectly personalised. Dining takes on many guises, from sitting under the stars on deck or cosy within the dining room, to barefoot on a beach nearby. Activities are tailored too, making the most of the destinations where the yacht drops anchor. Think scuba diving in a vertex of the Golden Coral Triangle, hiking Komodo’s hills in search of dragons, and playing with the yacht’s water toys before barbecuing on a secret beach.

Once an enterprise by two avid surfers who washed up on these shores in 1988, it’s the community, wildlife and an overall irrefutable seduction that has shaped this conservational juggernaut.
Centred on a working rice paddy field with its own century-old Hindu temple, this one-of-a-kind boutique resort evokes your sense of place in Ubud, Bali’s healing centre.
