The Reading Room

A Caribbean cocktail

When it comes to off-the-beaten-track charm, these paradise islands reign supreme.

Stories for... The Heart

The Caribbean is chock-full of unexpected gems and serendipitous quirks. The beaches, towns and forests of Grenada are ripe for exploration. Similarly, St Lucia offers eye-opening itineraries covering everything from majestic mountains to jazz performances.

In Grenada, check into Calabash Hotel, a Relais & Châteaux property exuding warmth. Make the most of the protected bay that Calabash calls home. Ditto the food and drink offering: Nori restaurant has rejuvenated the concept of Japanese and Nikkei (Peruvian) cuisine. There’s also all manner of amenities here, including a dive and watersports centre. Although one could happily not leave the resort, those looking for enrichment may be tempted to strike out – something that Calabash is happy to facilitate.

In unspoiled Grenada, you’ll find some of the finest nutmeg and cocoa in the world, which you can try in St Andrew. The terroir comprises rainforests, waterfalls and powder sand beaches. In the towns, especially the capital, St George’s, you’ll find fantastically colourful harbours. The west coast, meanwhile, is dotted with hidden beaches which reward those dedicated enough to look for them with breathtaking sunsets. Not bad for an island that’s only 21 miles long and 12 miles wide.

Cap Maison, St Lucia, beach

View over Cap Maison, St Lucia

Cap Maison in St Lucia, another Relais & Châteaux property, also makes for an elegant stay. Here, you’ll find all the requisite charms of a Caribbean break, from a secluded beach to a scrupulous focus on good food and wine. So, again, while fly-and-floppers will have no difficulty making this their base, for those who want not only to see the world but to experience it authentically, the hotel encourages exploration.

As an adventure-seeker, you’re probably drawn to the pair of dramatic mountains, the Pitons, on St Lucia’s west coast. The island is also home to volcanic beaches and imposing waterfalls, including the 15-metre high Toraille. The owners of Cap Maison, who are longtime residents of St Lucia, will give you the lowdown on their favourite hiking and running trails.

St Lucia is also populated by charming towns and villages. The capital, Castries, is a throwback to a bygone era with bustling weekly markets. There’s Pigeon Island National Park, home to an 18th-century fort from which you can see the island of Martinique, and the fishing village of Gros Islet, which throws a street party every Friday night. The concierge at Cap Maison will make sure you experience all of it to the fullest.

These islands are brimming with possibilities – you just need to know where to look.
