Highway highlife
Cruise through California’s most iconic cities and landscapes, drinking in the dramatic delights of San Francisco, Big Sur and Los Angeles with the wind in your hair and a thrill in your heart.
‘I left my heart in San Francisco,’ sang Tony Bennett. ‘High on a hill, it calls to me / To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars.’ The various gems of America’s West Coast have been immortalised in many a lyric, novel and film, their creators drawn to the beaches and bridges, hills and vineyards, city heights and bright lights. San Francisco has serious soul, charming visitors with its Golden Gate Bridge – in fact painted ‘International Orange’ – and pretty Painted Ladies, its Exploratorium, cable cars, and nearby winelands of Napa and Sonoma.
Drive 150 miles down the coast to the wild wonderland of Big Sur, which lends its name to a Jack Kerouac novel and songs by The Thrills and Jack Johnson; think beachside waterfalls, looming cliffs and the iconic Bixby Bridge, as depicted in the Nicole Kidman smash hit Big Little Lies. The romantic, secluded Post Ranch Inn is perched atop the cliffs; televisions are eschewed in favour of wood-burning fireplaces and decks with views that are out of this world. Occupy your time with everything from champagne breakfasts in bed and couples’ massages to yoga, stargazing experiences and golf at the world-famous Pebble Beach nearby.

The hotel’s award-winning cellar, which features more than 14,000 bottles, will whet appetites for Santa Barbara, the next port of call, with a Mediterranean-like climate and soil perfectly primed for grape growing. Before you visit its incredible wineries and downtown Funk Zone, watch the cult-classic film Sideways – this cemented Santa Barbara’s deserved place on the global traveller map. At El Encanto, A Belmond Hotel, expect gorgeous 1920s Cali-chic in suites and bungalows with rainforest showers. Within its landscaped grounds can be found a lily pond and a zero-edge pool.
Onwards down the iconic Pacific Coast Highway – although PCH trips off the tongue far more easily and makes one feel more like a local – to Tinseltown, La La Land, the City of Angels: Los Angeles. The all-suite London West Hollywood at Beverly Hills is the place to stay, in a neighbourhood with a glitzy, vibrant reputation that precedes it: panoramic city skyline views, a rooftop pool with gorgeous cabanas, and Boxwood On The Roof for drinks and dining, a venue beloved by Hollywood stars. You’ll leave the Golden State knowing exactly why its ‘biggest fan’ Joni Mitchell sang: ‘Oh, make me feel good... California, I’m coming home’.
