Space and time
Journey across the magnificent Canadian Rockies and through the country’s national parks for spectacular landscapes, thrilling adventures and complete immersion in natural wonders.
An expansive, joyful feeling of freedom pervades Canada, roughly the same size as the United States but with eight times fewer people. Visitors to this sprawling land are swept up in wonder, struck by a sense of immense possibility.
Stay as long as you can to allow Canada’s many charms to invigorate and elate. Start in Vancouver with a bike ride that takes in the indigenous histories of Stanley Park and grab a banh mi baguette in Chinatown, before boarding a train, but not like any you’ve boarded before.
Rocky Mountaineer
Rocky Mountaineer carriage
The Rocky Mountaineer offers what is routinely voted the most spectacular train trip in the world. During this journey, you gape and gasp at the lakes, prairies and magnificent glacier-clad mountains that flash past, and above, thanks to glass dome ceilings providing 180-degree views. Pause only to fortify yourself with Canadian five-star dining, including prime Alberta beef and award-winning wines, while knowledgeable hosts captivate travellers with stories about the indigenous people of each area.
On to Jasper, Lake Louise and Banff National Parks, where venturesome travellers will be handsomely rewarded by a host of adrenaline-boosting activities; from white water rafting and hikes, to canoeing and climbs with peerless views of turquoise-tinted lakes and craggy glaciers. Banff is great for thrill-seeking families, whether the kids fancy horse riding, heli-hiking or going in pursuit of a grizzly-sighting as bears emerge from hibernation.
Fairmont Banff Springs
Lake Louise
Although all great things come to an end, have one final Canadian city fling. Famed for its western-style extravaganza in July, the Calgary Stampede sees the city celebrate its roots while showcasing thriving art and culture, boutique shops and a foodie scene that is often (unfairly) overlooked.
Before you leave, stride across the 11 sq km of the city’s Nose Hill Park, breathe in the fresh air, and let that sense of space seep into your soul.
Even more
to see
A few hours' drive from Banff National Park, nestled within a landscape that is just as spectacular, is The Resort at Paws Up. Guests at this wilderness ranch are housed in rustic-luxe homes and safari-style tents with panoramic vistas, private decks, hot tubs, and a complimentary personal vehicle. There’s something for everyone: if you’re a horse person, try riding lessons, wagon driving and cattle drives. If you’re not, the summer calls for hot air ballooning, mountain biking, white water rafting and lake excursions. In the evenings, families and couples come together to toast s’mores by the fire pit and listen to folktales from local cowboys.
