Stories for... The Heart

All together now

Remember when your wide-eyed children caught sight of their Disney heroes, a moment they’d counted down to all year? A holiday to Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World® Resort – where having fun is the number one priority – will be full of unforgettable moments, for them and you. Gasp at the nightly firework extravaganza from the bedroom balcony; watch a movie in the family pool; have breakfast with Goofy and friends. You will never hear the end of it, and you won’t want to.

For the ultimate in R&R, stay closer to home: the Grecotel’s Corfu Imperial has mastered the art of pleasing guests of all ages. For starters, this peninsula is almost impossibly beautiful, in that mystical, olive-tree-speckled way, and has so much space that everyone can choose a beach – from four Blue Flag-awarded – for themselves. The ultra-luxe Villa Collection, with sparkling pools and private entrance area, includes a new penthouse, family suites and the Medusa Estate, which can be tailored as required. Younger ones will always remember learning to cook, and being inspired by watersports instructors; grownups will recount that time when they had a traditional dinner in Danilia Village where The Durrells and For Your Eyes Only were filmed.

Further south, in Crete, encircled by the glorious Mediterranean, Daios Cove bestows the gift of time on its guests (especially parents of little ones; the Creche Club baby-whisperers take babies from just four months). This calming hillside retreat has curated spaces to breathe, recharge and stay in the moment, whether that involves a bespoke spa ritual or poolside sundowners with live music. You’ll always remember the songs they played, and why it meant so much.

Over on the Atlantic side of things, at Domes Lake Algarve, Autograph Collection every generation of the family will feel thoroughly spoiled. While some  may zip off for a round on one of the nearby, world-class golf courses,  others will probably languish in the SOMA Spa or stroll along the harbour of Vilamoura.

All can stay active within the pretty pastel walls, and beyond, of The Ritz Carlton Tenerife, Abama though; its 400 acres are home to seven swimming pools, seven tennis courts and an exceptional 18-hole par 72 golf course. Kids  stay delightedly busy (and educated) courtesy of Europe’s largest Ritz Kids club – activities have been developed alongside Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society – while their grown-ups can hike up Teide volcano or take in a helicopter view of the beaches, barrancos and mountains. Perhaps best of all, however, is a celestial experience at the national park – one of the world’s few Starlight Reserves.

Just the two of us

Travel as far as you can to be immersed in experiential adventures of the most romantic, other-worldly kind. What will you tell folks back home about Kangaroo Island, Australia? That, here, Southern Ocean Lodge was spectacularly rebuilt above towering limestone cliffs, with ice-blue ocean waves thundering below? That you came face-to-face with koalas and frolicking fur seals, or that the labyrinth of caverns you explored were formed two million years ago?

Venturing to Cambodian soil, at Bensley Collection – Shinta Mani Wild, conservation and luxury are again on equal footing. Daring duos can accompany rangers to check anti-poaching camera traps and board expedition boats to explore waterways. Only one thing can eclipse the architectural mastery  of this camp – the design of its tents is said to be influenced by Jackie Kennedy’s visit in the 1960s – and that’s the ensemble  of wildlife that surrounds it.

Elsewhere, be lured out of your comfort zone into a world of wonder at Jumeirah Muscat Bay, amid the majesty of the Hajar Mountains and Gulf of Oman. Snorkel with turtles, visit the breathtaking Dimaniyat Islands and surrender to the bliss of an ‘Essence of Oman’ massage with therapeutic frankincense oil.
