Spain

  • View over roofs at a sandy beach cove

Characterised by scorching weather and fiery fiestas, with a culture as varied as the stonework of Sagrada Família, upon setting foot on its soil you’ll find that Spain truly sizzles as a unique and diverse nation that rolls out a red carpet (or cape) welcome.

Characterised by scorching weather and fiery fiestas, with a culture as varied as the stonework of Sagrada Família, upon setting foot on its soil you’ll find that Spain truly sizzles as a unique and diverse nation that rolls out a red carpet (or cape) welcome.

As a whole, this country is a sun-drenched escape with an air of passion and timelessness. Where crumbling ruins nostalgic of its Catholic history stand above streets playing host to renowned festivities after sundown. However, if you look closer, you’ll find the assembly of gothic cities, rugged islands and hilly medieval villages exude a quintessential Spanish flair while still keeping their own sense of personality.

These different sides beautifully oppose and complement each other fully and need to be experienced wholeheartedly. For us, you will be hard pressed to find anywhere closer to home that delivers such a feat of contrasts.

In pursuit of…

View across the water of Ibiza Town
… the far-flung closer to home

Most would cross continents both left and right for vibrant art scenes, shadowy pine forests, waves of dusty sand dunes and looming volcanic peaks that form cacti coastlines at their base – but those in the know bypass the long-hauls and simply venture a little further south. In the mainland cities, contemporary art spills out from the galleries literally into the streets, Phoenician, Roman and Moorish heritage lingers in the Balearics, and landscapes rivelling those in South America and Asia take over the Canary Islands.

Anthony Bourdain, Chef
“Any reasonable, sentient person who looks at Spain, comes to Spain, eats in Spain, drinks in Spain, they’re going to fall in love. Otherwise, there’s something deeply wrong with you. This is the dream of all the world.”

A sense of place

Get to know our favourite spots in Spain, from the differences between Ibiza’s north and south to the mature charm and traditional passion of Andalucia.

  • Brown and white sailboat in between rocky coastlines
    Mallorca

Despite being the largest of the Balearic Islands, Mallorca’s skill to cater to the many is still quite a feat for somewhere relatively small. Sheltered bays are a go-to for the yachting crowd, while on land, the get-up-and-goers either flock to the Tramuntana mountains or the medieval towns and quaint fishing villages depending on their inclination.

  • San Andres view of coastal towns and hills
    Tenerife

A firm favourite with sun-seekers, family forayers and (perhaps unexpectedly) whale watchers, Tenerife puts on a display that appeals to pretty much everyone. The south is where the smart resorts with their designer shops and upscale bars lie, while further north, vista-enthusiasts revel in the scaling heights of Mount Teide and the quaint cobblestoned town of Garachico.

    Explore
  • The Alhambra in Granada southern of Spain at sunset
    Andalucia

An evergreen escape for the celebrity crowd, Andalucia has that mature, old-school luxury charm that continues to be spiced up with every year. But venture deeper, and it’s a place passionate about tradition, steeped in a rich history and even richer wilderness. If one area had to embody Spain as a whole, it’s here.

    Explore
  • A town street with lots of flowers and plants
    Gran Canaria

The third largest Canary sibling, this island likes to keep visitors on their toes. From rippling sand dunes and turquoise waters to dramatic mountains and what seems like multiple seasons in a day, the beauty of Gran Canaria is its sheer amount of environ variation without even having to travel that far from your base.

    Explore
  • A dining table and two chairs under a tree in front of an orange building
    Ibiza

The south is where most congregate when hitting Ibiza’s shores, where the soundtrack goes from the twang of a medieval minstrel’s guitar to the thump of bars in full swing. Whereas in the bohemian north, it couldn’t be more different, with raw weathered landscapes and a farming culture that goes far deeper than the nightlife ever could.

    Explore
  • A cactus plant in front of a white wall with a window in
    Lanzarote

Lanzarote has steered away from mass tourism as of late, catering more towards independent wanderers. Putting things like underwater museums, smooth winding roads to make any cyclist swoon, and charcoal volcanic vineyards that surprisingly nourish a unique grape, at the forefront of any travellers necessity checklist.

    Explore
  • Swimmers and cliff jumpers at a rocky beach in Menorca
    Menorca

Taking a more left-field approach to luxury than its Balearic siblings, Menorca is more laid-back and no-frills-bohemian in its rural raw landscapes. One for the nature lovers and the foodie aficionados, agritourism is big in these parts with vineyards and farm-to-table vegetable patches being the highlights.

    Explore
  • Aerial view of La Rambla street lined with green trees in Barcelona
    Barcelona

Two worlds collide in Barcelona. Follow the cosmopolitan streets walked by art addicts touring mosaicked architecture and suddenly, they’ve seamlessly melted into an industrial-turned-contemporary waterfront. With a shop-studded promenade and beaches strewn with volleyball-playing bronzed beauties; creating a vibe of relaxed sophistication that is uniquely its own.
