USA South: Georgia, Louisiana/New Orleans, The Carolinas

  • A busy Mardi Gras in Bourbon street

Like one big simmering hot pot, the American South nourishes the soul; with its scrumptiously hearty recipes, smooth as velvet jazz scene, and magnetically bubbly spirit that brings everyone together.

Like one big simmering hot pot, the American South nourishes the soul; with its scrumptiously hearty recipes, smooth as velvet jazz scene, and magnetically bubbly spirit that brings everyone together.

And that’s precisely the reason that if the USA was to host a family gathering, it’s the Southern States we’d be instantly heading to. But it’d be wrong to trace its history back without recognising its forms of spirited resistance, bringing generations together with narratives of a jovial attitude and electrifying modes for connection. There’s everything from the African American-inspired Charleston and jazz scenes that are sure to get everybody dancing, to the art in Savannah that springboards the future of new work today.

Then, the table is set for a scrumptious tucking-in to a different kind of tale; with melt-in-your-mouth BBQs, handfuls of pie and distinctive ingredients that make everything so filling. Just be sure to take a look at the scenery on the way; painting the scene from orange and gold-licked Autumn trees to mystically swampy marshlands that make for the perfect setting of a chilling mystery tale.

… a grassroots story

Confronting the past head-on is an essential part of the American story, grounded in everyday people and a plethora of perspectives. Meaning there’s no better way to empower new understandings than with a first-hand account. From taking a boat across to Charleston’s Fort Sumter (where the civil war began) with a former marine and specialist historian, to hearing the personal account of a former-freedom fighter who stood alongside Dr King in Atlanta’s civil rights movement. And in bringing that same questioning forward to the social justice of today, there’s a chance to meet a New Orleans jazz musician and hear about what inspires this much-loved form of musical expression; in contrast to meeting Savannah's local artists and discovering what’s up-and-coming in the contemporary arts scene.

If the USA was to host a family gathering, it’s the Southern States we’d be instantly heading to.

A sense of place

Get to know our favourite spots in the American South, from the iconic jazz scenes of New Orleans to the snuggly coastal retreats of South Carolina.

  • Fountain at Forsynth park in savannah georgia at sunset
    Atlanta & Savannah, Georgia

From the epicentre of Martin Luther King’s involvement in the Civil Rights Movement to the modern-day metropolis of its thriving film and food industries, Georgia’s capital is admirably defiant and constantly buzzing with energy. While down south in Savannah, there’s a seemingly softer approach to it all, with its arts scene epicentre stirring youthful curiosity and manicured green spaces that encourage lollygagging and letting the days sink in.

  • A man walking on a street in front of pastel buildings
    New Orleans, Louisiana

Going way beyond its famed Mardi Gras, Louisiana’s capital, New Orleans, calls for a state of celebration. Filling rumbling tummies with its Creole and Cajun dishes, and the streets with its euphoric jazz, it’d be wrong to leave without finding your favourite spot on Bourbon Street for a singsong. And with nights quickly turning into day, the vibrant streets get amplified with their intriguing Creole architecture, art galleries, and indie boutiques.

  • Aerial photo of road running between forest during daytime
    North Carolina

The bigger twin of the two, we’d say the thing that sets North Carolina apart is her wider rollout of must-see cities for urban-enthusiasts (spanning Asheville, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Durham) and her iconic Blue Ridge Parkway that makes road-tripping the Appalachian Mountains a photographers dreamland. While both Carolina’s share their love for clinging onto compelling Autumn colours, diverse histories, great rounds of golf and a bounty of seafood and BBQs.

  • The Lighthouse at Harbor Town-Hilton Head, South Carolina seen reflected in the nearby water
    South Carolina

The smaller (and temperately warmer) twin, South Carolina’s capital of Charleston even rivals the jig with its up-and-kicking food and dance scene. But it’s the stronghold of the snuggly coastal retreats that are the ones to compete with, for their wide-open sands and intriguing wildlife that splatters across Kiwah Island, Palmetto Bluff and Hilton Head Island to name a few.
