OCEAN CRUISING

Beyond the typical idyllic landscapes, take-it-easy vibes and tales of buried pirate treasure, it’s obvious that these nations aren’t all cut from the same cloth.

OCEAN CRUISING

Beyond the typical idyllic landscapes, take-it-easy vibes and tales of buried pirate treasure, it’s obvious that these nations aren’t all cut from the same cloth.

Take the eastern isles for example, where Barbados’ glamorous edge complements the hiking-route-heavy jungles of St Lucia; yet contrasts perfectly with the laid-back shores of the British Virgin Islands and Grenada’s mellow attitude. A glorious middle ground of rest and revelry, found on the wild shores of St Kitts and Hollywood hotspot Turks & Caicos, means there’s no need to settle though.

To the west, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic dance to their own unique rhythms; the former a soulful sway, the latter a fiery flash of Spanish influence. While on the mainland and further south, spiritual Mexico and the waters around Central America are in the spotlight.

Bypassing the masses, smaller ships steal themselves away in more off-grid locations, swapping large ports for local villages and deserted beaches. Like those of Tobago Cays, Mayreau, Union Island and Bequia in the Grenadines, where visiting rum shacks and swimming near wild turtles are on the cards.

A spotlight on the places not to be missed

    • A serene beach scene at sunset with gentle waves lapping the shore, a clear sky, and a lush green tree line.
      Barbados

      Beyond the beaches

While Barbados may be small, its spirit is nothing short of carnival. This sunny island is brimming with a shack-full of personality and that means the onshore activities here pack a punch in their own right. The incredible web of geological formations of Harrison’s Cave and its surrounding wildlife tempt even the most dedicated of sunbathers off their loungers. A spark of wonder is ignited when swimming alongside turtles, and speaking of punch, touring the rum distilleries is as informative as it is delicious.

    • A scenic view of a tropical bay with lush green hills, a clear blue sky, and a single palm tree in the foreground.
      The Grenadines

      Hidden isles

This eclectic group of island characters know all the right ways to settle visitors into their tantalising reclusive lifestyle. The ocean is at the helm here, so embracing life both above and below it is recommended. Sea turtles patrol the waters of the Tobago Cays and snorkelling in the vicinity opens the door to their kaleidoscopic world. Cruising the glassy surface around Bequia on a catamaran, however, showcases a different world full of uninhabited isles, geographical wonders and the tropical hideaways of notable names. Back on dry land, the storied past of Bequia is highlighted on a heritage tour.

      British Virgin Islands

      Naturally exclusive

Pretty and wild at first glance, lovers of the laid-back have always flocked to the untamed shores shores of the BVIs. There’s a certain sparkle to this particular region that goes beyond its sugary beaches and yacht-studded marinas though. Of course, sailing is one of the top things to do, cruising the waters in search of secluded islets to ephemerally inhabit. Over on the third-largest island, the naturally formed caverns and pools of The Baths of Virgin Gorda demand to be explored. And paddling through the mangroves that dot the area gives an up-close view of the varied wildlife that calls them home.

      St Lucia

      Nature at her finest

The only sovereign nation named after a woman, it seems almost planned that Mother Nature chose to bestow this island with such organic beauty and grace. To really get a sense of the environment that defines her, going ashore and getting out and about is a must. Adrenaline junkies test their nerves zip-lining through the forest of an eco-park, or take to the skies for a bird’s-eye view of the Pitons from a helicopter. Meanwhile, the fainter of heart can still get a taste of what the environment has to offer in a ‘bean to bar’ chocolate class.
