OCEAN CRUISING

Famed for its sunny disposition and fresh, flavourful cuisine, the Mediterranean is infinite in its appeal.

OCEAN CRUISING

Famed for its sunny disposition and fresh, flavourful cuisine, the Mediterranean is infinite in its appeal.

From the still vivid paintings adorning the walls of Knossos Palace in the east, to the western grandeur of Barcelona’s Gaudi architecture, it’s clear to see why these destinations inspire so many picture-perfect postcards.

Pairing cities and shores is the charm of the Mediterranean, making it all too easy to visit storied lands, vibrant capitals and dramatic coastlines, sometimes all within a matter of moments. Stepping from cerulean seas to the shoreline, beautiful beaches beckon in the likes of Palma de Mallorca, while docking in Dubrovnik tempts even the most reluctant swimmers to bathe in its crystal-clear waters. Transporting globetrotters back in time, a short stroll inland weaves through the Old Town in both ports of call, greeting guests with the lingering landmarks of a bygone era.

Such timelessness transcends across this rich and varied region, from Valencia to Venice and the fabled Greek isles beyond. Whether it’s a maiden voyage or a familiar favourite, one lifetime is barely enough to scratch the surface.

A spotlight on the places not to be missed

      Spain

      A trip through time

Characterised by scorching weather and fiery fiestas, with a culture as varied as the stonework of the Sagrada Família, Spain truly sizzles as a diverse nation that rolls out a red-carpet welcome. A sun-drenched escape with an air of passion and timelessness, crumbling ruins nostalgic of its Catholic history stand above streets playing host to renowned festivities after sundown. Cruising through these parts isn’t all authentic flamenco and scarlet sangria, however. On the mainland, UNESCO World Heritage sites Albaicín and La Lonja steal the show in Grenada and Valencia, while Phoenician, Roman and Moorish heritage lingers in the Balearics.

    • Aerial view of a clear turquoise sea with boats near the shore, surrounded by rocky outcrops and trees.
      Italy

      Florentine favourites

Name a country more culturally revered than Italy; its heady mix of chaos and calm catering to culture vultures, enlivening history aficionados and exceeding all expectations for epicureans. With a rich history spanning thousands of years, ancient cobbled streets give way to bustling town squares where local fare and good times reign. Though the likes of Rome and Milan first spring to mind, Florence offers a further foray into the mainland. Effortlessly bringing art, architecture and fashion to the table, visit the Uffizi Galleries, the Duomo Cathedral, and a spot to watch the sun dip below the skyline at Piazzale Michelangelo.

      Croatia

      A convergence of cultures

Here, everything moves at an unhurried pace across 5,000 kilometres of dramatic coastline. Step into history-steeped cities and sleepy villages, where life continues much as it did a century ago. In Dubrovnik, orange-hued roofs contrast against the azure waters of the Adriatic. Encircled in medieval limestone walls surging from the sea, labyrinthine alleys and piazzas are alive with outdoor life. Cosmopolitan cafés spill out onto Placa Street, where glasses of local plum brandy flow. Further north, Split suggests swimming in the waterfalls of Krka National Park, and sophisticated Hvar sees sleek yachts dot the harbour, nestling in the embrace of attractive Romanesque architecture.

    • A view through a white archway with steps leading down towards the sea, featuring a cruise ship in the distance and clear blue skies.
      Greece

      The modern-day odyssey

The home of all things mythological, the mountain-laden mainland of Greece and its pantheon of rugged islets know how to attract kindred wanderlusters. Greece’s effigy is that of sun-roasted ruins and beaches galore, though there’s far more to the region than beauty that’s skin deep. The mainland is often overlooked for its Aegean-dwelling siblings, but the cool creative crowd of Athens know the shadow of the Acropolis is a playground for heritage seekers with a penchant for folklore. Meanwhile, out to sea, the islands sing an enticing siren song to the masses, doting on the local traditions of Olympia, foodie finds on Crete, and the glamour of a Santorini sunset.
