OCEAN CRUISING

Skipping through the pages of fabled folklore comes easy in Europe’s northern realms.

In the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland, tracing ancient Viking trade routes leads to the likes of Copenhagen’s colourful harbour houses, Tallin’s medieval alleyways and Helsinki’s pioneering design scene. Nature takes hold in Stockholm’s 30,000-island archipelago, while searching for wildlife in the Norwegian Fjords involves sailing past slumbering Norse giants towards an ancient Sámi culture.

Crossing the North Sea, Neolithic secrets pervade Orkney, turning to maritime tales through the Hebrides, to Liverpool, and across to Dublin. While up near the Arctic Circle, the elements battle in a country once thought to house the birthplace of the gods – Iceland.

Port report
A spotlight on the places not to be missed

    • Aerial view of a densely built city with numerous buildings and intersecting waterways under a clear sky.
      Copenhagen, Denmark

The food scene in Denmark’s capital is as cool as you’d expect from anything coming out of this Scandi metropolis to be. Weave through the buzzing markets alongside a master chef to source the best of the local ingredients, before heading back onboard to help cook up a storm.

    • Aerial view of Stockholm cityscape with historic buildings, waterways, and boats during sunset.
      Stockholm, Sweden

Neighbourhood-hopping over the 14 islands that comprise Stockholm city unearth its changing faces, but only 12 miles out lies a facet that can’t be replicated – Tyresta National Park. A naturalist-lead hike through primeval pines helps when identifying flora and fauna, while sitting around a campfire welcomes the calm that only nature can conjure.

    • A cobblestone street winds through a picturesque European old town with colourful, historic buildings under a clear blue sky.
      Tallin, Estonia

Laden with fairytale turrets and museums that rewind time from Soviet to medieval, it’s easy to get lost within Estonia’s charming cities. Away from the cobbled streets, though, is a wild and wonderful landscape, best experienced in Lahemaa National Park where a walk through the marshland ends with a live concert.
