Adrenaline meets après-harmony in the Swiss Alps

  • Landscape of Andermatt in Switzerland with snow-covered valley, mountains, buildings, and a winding road.
Ski & spa: Andermatt - Lake Lucerne

Nowhere treats skiers to variety quite like the Swiss Alps; but when they’re invited to go from teetering on mountain peaks to languishing in moments of peace, this region proves it has the best of both worlds.

Nowhere treats skiers to variety quite like the Swiss Alps; but when they’re invited to go from teetering on mountain peaks to languishing in moments of peace, this region proves it has the best of both worlds.

A long-time favourite for the European ski set, Andermatt is a masterclass in five-star Alpine charm. With over 180km of linked slopes, it’s a mixed crowd that descends here and its neighbours of Sedrun and Disentis, but the aficionados that have it best. Days are spent exploring the snow sure terrain and off-piste touring and glacier skiing opportunities. When gear is safely hung up for the day, a different kind of thrill takes over in the realm of fine dining, with traditional Swiss fare being served alongside delicacies from further afield.

Coming down from the mountains, heart-pumping pursuits give way to serenity on the banks of Lake Lucerne. A powerhouse of the spa-o-sphere calls this corner of the world home, with treatments ranging from hydrothermal journeys to rejuvenating massages providing a much-needed respite for sore limbs. With access granted before check-in and after check-out, there’s plenty of time to recuperate. If the call to explore is still strong though, Lucerne city beckons with its seasonal festivals and nearby Engelberg tempts taking to the pistes one last time.

A taste of
what's to come

Chase indulgence at Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa Resort

As peaceful as the lake it overlooks, the Alpine Spa is a 10,000 square-metre sanctuary. 13 treatment rooms house muscle-melting therapies that aid skiing recovery, four saunas promote a detox, and the spa garden provides a moment of mindfulness. There are even five pools to pick from — including the outdoor infinity marvel surrounded by a mountainous diorama. Bürgenstock haven’t stopped there though, mini-mes of the facilities are found in the private spa suites, offering the same calibre of experience but with the added luxury of having it all to yourself.

    • A calming view of the Jesuit Church and Water Tower on the Reuss River in Lucerne, Switzerland, with Mount Pilatus in the background during twilight.
      Explore life in Lucerne

Naturally pretty and brimming with history, Lucerne practically demands to be explored. Easily accessible via a funicular and the MS Bürgenstock Catamaran, warm summer afternoons are taken up by exploring the icons of the city and museums or attending one of many events like the festival of classic music. Come winter, quintessential Alpine scenes take over as the streets come alive with Christmas markets and authentic celebrations, from the Lilu light festival to the Luzern Fasnacht — the largest carnival in the area.

    • The Titlis suspension bridge with a metal mesh floor and side fencing spans across a snowy mountain landscape under a clear blue sky.
      Skim the slopes of Engelberg

For those a little slope-sick after leaving Andermatt, Engelberg has the remedy. Just 40 minutes from Bürgenstock by road, a compact 82km of pistes makes it easy to get a ski-fix while still being able to get back to the spa by mid-afternoon. Between runs, a pass to ride the world’s first revolving cable car to Mount Titlis also grants access to the glacier grotto and Europe’s highest suspension bridge, before inviting seasoned pros to glacier ski at 3,020m.
