With a host of adults-only credentials ticked off, Hotel Wailea wins hearts from the get-go. Privately compact, its intimate size is evident by the short time it takes for staff to learn names, but that’s the only give away. The tropical gardens give a very different impression; housing an expanse of fruit trees and pathways perfect for moments of stolen romance. It’s not on the beach, but that’s no snag. There’s a huge pool area and sweeping ocean views to compensate. Should the call of the water’s edge prove too irresistible, however, beach picnics in a prime sunset spot close by still ensure precious time for two.
The hotel’s biggest brag, though, is that its guests get one of the best restaurants in the whole state all to themselves. Practicing a casual yet innovative approach to dining, dishes highlight the region’s heritage while its hilltop perch frames three of the islands that serve as inspiration. Al fresco is the way forward here to make the most of those lush gardens. With evening dining adding an extra twinkle to the eye with fairy lights framing tables beneath the stars. But table 24 is the one to vie for – it’s squirreled away in a secluded corner of the terrace. There’s no shortage of places to retreat post-meal either.
